Posted E-RATE Form 470
Thursday, November 17, 2005, 07:46 AM
I collected PAISD telecommunications and Internet service billing information the last few weeks and reviewed the "eligible service list" on the SLD web site. I've posted PAISD Form 470 for E-RATE on November 16 (yesterday). Additional PAISD E-Rate related documentation is posted on my office server here.

( 3 / 321 )PAISD Filtering
Thursday, November 10, 2005, 10:43 PM
I set up Dansguardian web filtering and added it to our network scheme for additional options on filtering & blocking student Internet use on the school LAN. We are testing Dansguardian now in three campus labs. The PAISD Network Safety Policy is linked here to adhere to CIPA.* These filters are all open source Linux-based networking solutions. This configuartion has saved our school district thousands of dollars on propietary software, licenses, annual subsciption fees and network devices.
Replication of this network scheme could save lots of money for lots of school districts.

( 3 / 681 )Power Outage!
Wednesday, November 9, 2005, 06:26 PM
Yipes!
We lost power for about one second on this part of the island at around 11:15 this morning and my FC3 workstation burPed! (206.76.144.15). I was working on some pictures with the Gimp for the Board meeting tomorrow night at the time. The workstation would not come back up and kept freezing at boot. I finally whacKed the /tmp files when I got a message that perhaps I did not own the console. I had posted a message to SATLUG in frustration about 2 PM:
We had a one second power outage today and now my FC3 workstation stalls on boot at "Setting up Logical Volume Management." Can someone suggest what commands I should run after booting to linux rescue from the CD or other solution?
-Leif

( 3 / 729 )GS Access
Tuesday, November 8, 2005, 11:01 AM
Date: Tue, 8 Nov 2005 10:44:03 -0600 (CST)
From: Leif Johnson <leif@paisd.net>
To: HS Staff List
Subject: Gradespeed Student Access
After the article in the Jetty about GradeSpeed Parental Access I have had several requests by HS students to gain access to their on-line Gradespeed averages. I am requiring the GS Access form to be signed before I'm allowing access (available in on-line forms). I just want to advise teachers that parents/students will have access to their grades posted to GS in the near future.
Link to PAISD Forms
There was also a request by a teacher to have access to student grades for monitoring purposes for UIL/events eligibility. I'm not sure how we should handle that. Comments welcomed.
This issue will be on the next agenda for DWEIC (Dec meeting). Any
comments will be shared in that forum.

Sincerely,
-Leif Johnson

( 3 / 782 )BMS Graphics
Thursday, November 3, 2005, 02:38 PM
I was helping Ms. H. at Middle School to sort out a few html errors during lunch. She had encountered a few graphics alignment problems and I started to realize that the graphics I had originally posted in 2002 could use a facelift. Ms. H. had a new photo of the school. I merged the old header jpeg with the new one Ms. H. posted. It looks better to me. Link: BMS Web Page [ add comment ] | [ 0 trackbacks ] | permalink |

( 3 / 860 )Jetty Article 110305
Thursday, November 3, 2005, 08:08 AM
Dan Parker came by last week and interviewed me for an article about GradeSpeed. I copied the article and created a quick HTML file with Open Office: South Jetty Newspaper Article Nov. 3, 2005
-The article is basically about how we are setting up "Parental Access" to student grades via the school web site. I think he was confused between the RSCCC SMS and Gradespeed, but overall it's a fair summary of how PAISD is facilitating greater communication between parents and the schools.

( 3 / 649 )GradeSpeed

Parent Access to Student Grades Online
We're adding "parental access" to student grades for the HS this week. Parents will be able to check current grades for their child via the school web site. This consists mainly of entering user login/password data for each HS student. Jeff is helping with data entry. I am developing a GS application for parents that should be ready for distribution w/ the next report card (Nov 16 or so). MS and Olsen will have parental access by the semester break.
If this proves to be popular with parents, teachers and the board, I'll recommend upgrading to the "Parent Connection" module for GradeSpeed at additional cost for next year.
The next upgrade/backup of Gradespeed is scheduled for the end of this grading cycle (Nov. 11).
1. all files with an extension of .gs (Located in the GSCommon > Teacher > [Teacher ID] > GSData folder for each campus)
2. all files with the name of gsdb.mdb (Located in the Server folder)
This will backup all of the data that is needed to restore the server in the event of a catastrophic data loss. GradeSpeed keeps backups of all of the data used by GradeSpeed. The software has built in recovery logic to recover and rebuild a database in the event of a power outage or other failure.
