Open Source Web Filtering
Tuesday, August 8, 2006, 08:54 AM

I'm updating all web filters today with dansgaurdian and URLBlacklists.

# As a guide:
# 50 is for young children, 100 for old children, 160 for young adults.
naughtynesslimit = 50

# Temporary Denied Page Bypass
# It provides a link on the denied page to bypass the ban for a few minutes. To be
# secure it uses a random hashed secret generated at daemon startup. You define the
# number of seconds the bypass will function for before the deny will appear again.
# To allow the link on the denied page to appear you will need to edit the template.html
# or dansguardian.pl file for your language.
# 300 = enable for 5 minutes
# 0 = disable ( defaults to 0 )
# -1 = enable but you require a seperate program to generate a valid link
bypass = 0

# Temporary Denied Page Bypass Secret Key
# Rather than generating a random key you can specify one. It must be more than 8 chars.
# '' = generate a random one (recommended and default)
# 'Ring Around The Rosie.' = an example
# '76b42abc1cd0fdcaf6e943dcbc93b826' = an example
bypasskey = ''

spamassassin upgrade
Friday, July 7, 2006, 10:54 AM

I performed an update of Spamassassin(3.1.3) on the faculty mail server last night. I used CPAN to get the lastest release. It was a snap! I also configured bayes to do autolearning. This is already cutting down the vast load on junk emails delivered to our staff's mailboxes.

[root@mail leif]# sa-learn --spam --mbox mail/Learn Spam
Learned tokens from 18 message(s) (18 message(s) examined)

To get this to work correctly and stop generating errors I had to change the location and permissions on the bayes directory:

mkdir /var/spool/spammassassin
cp /root/.spamassassin/* /var/spool/spamassassin/

chown nobody.nobody /var/spool/spamassassin/
chown nobody.nobody /var/spool/spamassassin/*

And add this to /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf:
#
auto_whitelist_path /var/spool/spamassassin/auto_whitelist
bayes_path /var/spool/spamassassin/bayes

# Use Bayesian classifier (default: 1)
#
use_bayes 1
# Bayesian classifier auto-learning (default: 1)
#
bayes_auto_learn 1

Restarted spamassassin and it seems to be working fine.

Puerto Escondido June 2006
Saturday, June 24, 2006, 09:21 PM

The surf in Puerto Escondido was excellent! Though the waves were too large for Mark & Ray at Zicatela, they found some good breaks nearby. (Photos of our trip) We left Corpus Christi at 7AM on June 6 and flew via Houston, Mexico City to Puerto Escondido. The people were friendly, the food was great and the cultural experience was insightful. [br]Puerto is not as commerical as other Mexican coastal cities.

We spent a few days travelling up and down the Oaxacan coast and visited many seaside villages and surf spots. Rick, John and Gregg did not have much luck fishing for Marlin, but we all had a great time. After we missed our connecting flight in Mexico City we finally returned on the late flight from Houston to Corpus on June 13. I can't wait to go again. -Leif

Network Notes
Monday, May 15, 2006, 01:05 PM
A Few Network Notes For May 2006:

Summer Preparations: Please shutdown all PCs in your classrooms over the summer. You should
store all PC hardware up off the floor to avoid water damage in the event of a storm.

Email services are open all summer. You can access your email via the school web site from
home or while on vacation. If you need help with logging in and passwords please let us help
you with it.

SPAM: I'll update the spam filters probably twice during the summer. There may be a brief
period where the spam level jumps.

WEB BLOCKING: Can you believe our students are now using vtunnel to circumvent the proxy
filters? They are. I am in the process of increasing the filtering level once again. So as I
increase the filtering you may experience blocking of legitimate sites. Let me know if you
need help with the web filters.

CHALKWAVES: We added a new Chalkwaves server to the school LAN on May 9th. This will allow
our teachers to add educational video clips to their lessons. There is quite a volume of
video loaded on the server. We also have the ability to receive video file updates via a UHF
yagi antenna from the KEDT studio.

REPAIRS: We do not have much of a budget for summer repairs. We won't be able to order new
parts until September. but lots of stuff we can fix without any cost. Please make sure your
repair order gets posted on the work order web list. This will help us expedite your
requests.

Staff Development: We are planning out staff development for August.
We will probably just do technology training for the new staff unless there is a request for
specific technology related training. The staff survey is still on-line (it links off the resource page):Survey

Have A Safe Summer Compadres.

Sincerely,
-Leif Johnson
