Summer Reading List
Friday, June 8, 2007, 12:00 PM

With Summer here and lots of time off I've started working on my reading list. I crave fiction after so much structured discipline during the year.

In early May The Office of Technology Services at UT Austin asked us to make a change in our secondary DNS and submit the changes to the Texas Regional Hostmaster. I made the changes in our DNS data files and filled out the on-line forms for the change to take effect. I kept getting these auto-generated messsages from the Hostmaster saying that a FAX had been queued for delivery and that once the authorization was signed and faxed back the changes would be registered etc, etc. The thing is the fax never came until I finally got through to a human (maybe the Texas Regional Hostmaster himself!). Suddenly we got three faxes in a row. I guess the queue was cleared eh?

Alien Picture Re-Surfaces After Two Years!
Friday, May 25, 2007, 03:42 PM

The picture of James standing next to a real alien in New Mexico a few years ago had mysteriously disappeared off of this web site during an upgrade last year. I found a copy of it in my picture archive just a few minutes ago and decided to post it again.

Procmail comes to mind. In your /etc/procmailrc put:

Last Daily Spanish Quiz
Thursday, May 24, 2007, 11:08 AM

Today I'm administering the last daily vocabulary quizzes of the 2006-2007 school year for my three sections of Spanish 1. They've learned MUCHO this year. The semester exams are scheduled for next week. Graduation is set for Friday June 1. (in the graphic above I cut off the end of the word "neatly" when I added the blue border).

Great Weekend!
Sunday, May 20, 2007, 02:52 PM

My wife organized a super surprize birthday party for me on Friday. She truly caught me off guard. Party on Friday night, Baseball game on Saturyday morning followed by a team pizza party at the Port A Pizzeria, then Jr. Sr. Prom from 8 - midnight Saturday night followed by a a massive cleanup campaign on Sunday morning at Dune Crest so the Junior class could get their $300 deposit back. What a wonderful life!

Paul Matthews Sportsmanship Award
Friday, May 11, 2007, 07:19 AM

PLAYER NOMINATION: Garrett C.
Team Barracudas

From Manager: Leif Johnson

I'm astounded by one player that has stood out among the others in the machine pitch league this year. Garrett C. came to us early in the season with a grand enthusiasm for the game of baseball. He consistently demonstrates his considerate and helpful demeanor at every practice and every game. As our primary catcher Garrett is in the center of each and every pitch of the game. He constantly demonstrates
the positive attributes of a good attitude, and encouragement and a true love of the sport of baseball. In one such instance while at the plate catching for the Barracudas, Garrett felt compelled to speak to the umpire after an inning because he knew the ball had been slightly tipped on the last pitch and an opposing team member on the Hurricanes was called "out." He approached the umpire briefly and made his proclamation, accepted the umpire's call and made his way to our dugout to prepare for batting with a smile and a spark in his step as always. Another player mentioned that he should have just kept quiet about the call, but Garrett insisted that the rules of the game should govern the play and a player should promote good sportsmanship by adhering to those rules. It was at that point I realized my admiration and respect for this young man. Not only had he manifested his own convictions, but he did so in a way that promoted the value of good sportsmanship and respect for the game of baseball to the entire team. Several other players on either team may have greater athletic ability, but Garrett is focused on baseball and and works hard to become a better player and to help his teammates. It is really astounding to me that a third grader could demonstrate such dedication to the sport. That's why I recommend Garret C. for the Paul Matthews Sportsmanship Award. I see that he holds the values and principles of the game close to his heart. He has an acute reverence for the rules of the game, and promotes a positive approach to sports to others his age. Please consider our nomination for Garret for this most honored community award.

Sincerely,
Leif Johnson
